Seven Biblical Facts About Your Thoughts!
The bible has a lot to say about Christian thinking, so here are seven biblical facts about your thoughts. I think you will be so glad you’ve learnt these, you’ll have to share them with someone.
The First and Greatest Commandments.
Matthew 22:37-38
- “Jesus said to him, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’ 38. This is the first and great commandment”.
When Jesus was asked a testing question about the commandments, this was His reply. Although He spoke about loving God with all your Heart, Soul and Mind we will just focus on the mind for this article.
The question was; “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” and Jesus answered among other things that you should love God with all your mind.
Your mind is the where your thoughts, knowledge, intellect, feelings and intentions are stored. So you can see if you love God with all of these aspects of your mind you would have attained a standard of holiness befitting a child of God.
God Gave You a Sound Mind.
2 Timothy 1:7
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
One of the devils strongest weapons that he uses against us is Fear. He knows that if he can fill your mind with fear, then he has a doorway through your faith.
It is evident from this verse that fear is a spirit, and like all spirits, it has to bow to the name of Jesus. The name Jesus is above every other name and this includes the name Fear.
So when the devil tries to attack you with Fear (and he will) this is a very good verse to remind him of.
You Can Control Your Thoughts.
2 Corinthians 10:4-5
- For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5. casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,
As the Apostle Paul states here to the church in Corinth the battle for your mind is not a physical one. The weapons that God has given you are very powerful. Pauls says they are mighty!
God has given you a great big sword with which to fight this battle. Your Sword is the Word of God. For an example of how to use the Word effectively read how Jesus used it in Matthew 4:1-11.
Jesus’ answer to the devil’s lies was, “it is written”, and then He quoted scripture. When Jesus got fed up of Satan’s foolishness He told him “AWAY WITH YOU SATAN”!
The bible says that Satan left Him and angels came and ministered unto Jesus.
This how you are to tackle the unholy thoughts that Satan will tempt you with. Instead of allowing those thoughts free reign in your mind, make them captive to the word of God.
Any strongholds that the devil has built up in your mind can also be pulled down by constant training and use of the Sword that you have been given.
You Need to Be Brainwashed to Have your Mind Transformed.
Romans 12:2
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Ephesians 4:22-24
- that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23. and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24. and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.
Before you came to Christ your sinful nature would allow all sorts of thoughts to enter your mind unchallenged. The result of this means that when you become a child of God you now need to have your mind cleansed and renewed.
Paul refers to it as “putting off the old man”. You can’t live how you were living before; you must now wash your mind with the word. You must tear down every stronghold that the devil has been allowed to build up in your mind.
You must now replace those strongholds with the Word of God, and you must fill that space. The book of Matthews tells us what happens if it’s left empty.
Matthew 12:44-45
- Then he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. 45. Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation.”
Every child of God needs good brainwashing!
Lustful Thoughts!
Matthew 5:27-28
- “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY.’ 28. But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Adultery is quoted many times in the bible as one of the sins that will keep you out of the will of God and ultimately out of heaven.
For some, you may say, “Well I haven’t cheated on my spouse so that doesn’t apply to me”.
Well if you can honestly say that you never see someone of the opposite sex and allow lustful thoughts entry into your mind, then you would be right.
But if you are among the many Christians who are having these types of thoughts and are allowing them free reign in your mind. Even using them to build a feature-length movie!
You MUST get a grip of this sinful behaviour and recognise that you are sinning, and repent!
Stinking Thinking, What Goes in will Bear Fruit.
Matthew 6:22-23
- “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. 23. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
Mark 7:21-22
- For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22. thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness.
The eyes are the gateway to the soul and as such whatever you allow yourself to see regularly will get downloaded into your subconscious.
You can become so desensitised evil thoughts that they seem normal. You can start to act out these thoughts without feeling the slightest bit of conviction.
The answer to this is obvious; guard your eyes!
In this day and age, it is so easy to see ungodly stuff daily.
With the invention of smartphones and the internet, pornography, lewdness and murders are only a click away.
It is very hard and sometimes impossible not to see some of this stuff, but we can ask the Holy Spirit to keep a hedge around us so that nothing will penetrate.
If you can keep your mind on Jesus, the Lord will keep you in perfect peace.
Isaiah 26:3
You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You.
You Will Be Judged on Your Thoughts.
Luke 12:2-3 2. For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be known. 3. Therefore whatever you have spoken in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have spoken in the ear in inner rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops.
1Corinthians 4:5
Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each one’s praise will come from God.
Psalm 139:1-4
- For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. O LORD, You have searched me and known me. 2. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. 3. You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways. 4. For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O LORD, You know it altogether.
Psalm 94:11
The LORD knows the thoughts of man, That they are futile.
Can you imagine what it would be like if everyone could see what you are thinking every minute of every day? Well God can and the bible tells us that even our thoughts will be judged, so take control of your mind and be repentant for your actions and your thoughts.
Ecclesiastes 12:14
For God will bring every work into judgment, Including every secret thing, Whether good or evil.
